Hunting Public is a public-land hunting and e-scouting app operated by Dykes Ventures LLC
("we", "us"). It runs at huntingpublic.app as a web app and as an Android app. This page
explains what the app and our servers handle, why, and how to get rid of it. The short
version: the app works fully without an account, there is no advertising and no
third-party analytics, and we do not sell personal information.
Information we handle
- Account — optional. If you create an account we store a username, an email
address and a password. Passwords are stored only as a PBKDF2-SHA256 hash with a random
per-account salt — never in plain text, and we cannot read your password. You can use the
app as a guest ("Continue without an account"); then no account is created at all.
- Waypoints (pins). Pins you drop and name — coordinates, label and type — are
saved on your device. In the web app, when you are signed in, they are also synced to
your account, so they appear on any device you sign in on. Pins created in the Android
app stay on that device.
- Tracks. Recorded tracks stay on your device and can be exported as GPX files.
Tracks are not uploaded to us.
- Location. With your permission the app uses your device's location to show
where you are on the map and to compute the legal-shooting-light times. That happens on
the device. If you are signed in, a single last-known location (a latitude/longitude
pair) may be stored with your account so a fresh install can pick up where you left off
— it is not a location history, never sold, and never used for advertising.
- Searches. When you search for an address or a place name, the words you typed
are sent directly from your browser to the U.S. Census geocoder or USGS GNIS to turn them
into coordinates. Those are public, no-key services; we do not store your search text.
- Map and weather requests. Basemaps, elevation tiles and map fonts are fetched
directly from their providers (USGS The National Map, AWS Terrain Tiles, OpenMapTiles),
and the local forecast from the National Weather Service. These requests necessarily say
which map area or grid cell your device is viewing, along with the usual request
metadata. They are not sent to us and are not used for advertising.
- Supporter activity. If you become a supporter, the roadmap votes you cast and
whether you have read an announcement are stored with your account. If you send feedback,
the text is stored with your username and the screen you were on when you sent it.
- Payments. The supporter subscription is processed by Stripe. Your card details
go to Stripe's checkout page, never to the app or to our servers; Stripe holds them, and
Stripe's own privacy policy applies to them. We store only your subscription status and
Stripe's customer/subscription identifiers so the app knows supporter features are on.
- Diagnostics. We do not collect crash logs or usage analytics, and the app ships
no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. While the app runs it keeps an in-memory
list of errors for on-screen troubleshooting; that list is not stored and not uploaded
anywhere. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs (IP address, time, URL) to run
and protect the service.
Where it lives, and who processes it
- On your device: your sign-in token, waypoints, tracks and settings in local
storage, plus cached map data so the app works with no signal.
- With your account (only when you sign in): username, email, hashed password,
waypoints, last-known location, votes, feedback, announcement read-state and subscription
status. What a device uploads differs a little: the web app syncs waypoints and can store
a last-known location, while the Android app keeps its waypoints, tracks and location on
the device and sends only account activity (sign-in, votes, feedback, subscription).
- Service providers: Cloudflare (hosting and the account API/database), Stripe
(payments) and Resend (password-reset emails). They process data for us as providers.
Basemaps and public-land data come directly from U.S. government services (USGS, USFS,
Census, GNIS, NWS).
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no third-party analytics or trackers.
- We do not sell or rent personal information — to anyone, for any purpose.
- We do not use your location for anything except the map and the light times.
Public-domain map data
Public-land boundaries, roads, trails, place names and weather come from public-domain
U.S. Government sources — PAD-US (USGS), USGS The National Map, USFS, the U.S. Census
Bureau, USGS GNIS and the National Weather Service. These datasets contain no personal
data. They are also estimates: see the Terms of Use and verify current
rules before hunting. Hunting Public is an independent app and is not affiliated with,
operated by, or endorsed by any of these agencies — see Data Sources
for every source and its link.
Children
Hunting Public is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect
personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and
we will delete it.
Retention and deleting your account
We keep account data while your account exists. You can delete your account and
everything attached to it — username, email, password hash, waypoints, stored
location, votes and feedback — from inside the app: open Supporter in the
menu, scroll to Account, and tap Delete my account. Without the app
installed, email [email protected] and ask us to delete it. Full
instructions: Delete Your Account.
Deleting your account does not automatically cancel a Stripe subscription. Cancel it
first in the app (Supporter → Manage subscription), or tell us you want both done
and we will help. Data in routine infrastructure backups, if any, ages out automatically.
Security
All traffic uses HTTPS, and passwords are stored as salted PBKDF2-SHA256 hashes rather
than plain text. No system is perfect — if you find a problem, tell us at the address below.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we will update this page and its effective date. Material changes
will be noted here, and continued use of the app after a change means you accept the
updated policy.
